After-School Enrichment: Exploring Chinese Culture through Peking Opera Mask Making (京剧 – Liǎnpǔ)

Students from KG.1 and KG.3 in the After-School Chinese Program enjoyed a special and creative activity as they designed their own “Liǎnpǔ” (脸谱)—the iconic facial designs used in Peking Opera (京剧), a traditional Chinese performing art.

Liǎnpǔ is more than face painting; the colors and patterns symbolize a character’s personality, traits, role, and destiny in the opera. Through this activity, students were able to:

  • Learn about and experience traditional Chinese art and culture
  • Express their creativity and imagination by designing masks in their own unique styles

Our ACEP students had great fun using vibrant colors and imagination to create their own Liǎnpǔ masks with pride and joy. This activity beautifully integrates language learning with cultural appreciation in a fun and meaningful way
